I'm always surprised by how little the rest of the world knows about the German music industry. There is so much more than classical music, Techno, Milli Vanilli and Falco.
Modern German pop music is quite good - and for those of you who don't fancy listening to music in a foreign language, you can find German bands that sing in English. I'm a huge music lover and have music in many languages that I love, from J-Pop and K-Pop stuff to Italian pop stars, French and Turkish music like thedelicious man candy talented Tarkan.
I have shared some of my favorite bands on haus maus in the past but it's time for an update because I recently went shopping for CDs and would love to share my recent faves with you - all German. I'll link them below on Amazon.de for the locals so you can easily find them online.
Ivy Quainoo - All songs in English, she's from Berlin and her stuff is all over the radio here. Personal favorites from this cd include Do You Like What You See and Break Away. She could totally do a song for a Bond film, she has the voice for it. I'd like to see her break into the US and UK markets, she has the potential.
Cro Raop - The cover lured me in, plus they've had the cover as posters around some cities I've been to in Germany this summer, so their marketing clearly paid off because I'm a new fan and now I'm blogging about them. :) Lyrics in German.
Xavier Naidoo - I've listened to his music for years but his new cd is really good -- Lyrics in German.
Mark Forster - Really solid vocals and talented guy. I want to see him when he comes to Hannover. Lyrics in German.
Pilot - Great voice and vibe. Really like this guy. Another talent I want to eventually see live. Lyrics in German.
Mia Diekow - She's a little kooky and I love it. Her songs are really diverse. Lyrics in German.

Hi Holly, those are great music picks and I hope it makes listening to German artists more atractive to your readers! Just to let you know Cro is an individual artist feom Stuttgart, who is energising the German rap scene/creating a new (sub?) genre which he describes as raop (the title of his freshman album) - a hybrid of rap and pop and tgus commerically appealing. What is particularly attractive to me about his music is the sampling of familiar songs such as Jerk It Out by Caesars for Kein Benz etc which give instant recognition with a twist. I hope you enjoy your purchase!

It's always fun to hear about new music artists... especially world music. I've been really enjoying a few rhythmically dreamy songs lately that go along great with this late summer/early autumn weather we've been having: Asaf Avidan "One day / Reckoning Song" (Wankelmut Remix) and Rudimental "Feel the Love".

Great post! Some of my favorites are:
Jan Delay, Zwei Raum Wohnung and Die Sterne. I also recently discovered a great Bavarian group aus Allgäu called Frittenbude. I've been listening to and loving FM4 out of Austria during the day when I work. Great mix of broadcasting in English, German and even French, and wonderful for discovering European and local music.
I will have to check out all these recommendations. I am a new reader, just found this blog from a link on your other blog Decor8. Anyway, I was so excited to see that you are an expat! I second Jan Delay, especially live if you get the chance.
Two other names spring to mind: Ina Müller ("Das grosse Du" in case you feel like prolonging this summer, but she has recorded a lot more and is a very talented lady, full of what we call "Schalk").
And Niels Frevert (beautiful texts, especially on "Du Kannst Mich An der Ecke Rauslassen").

Oh so great! I'm German but I have no clue about the local music scene at all - thanks so much, I will definitely check out those bands.
I just returned from beloved Santa Barbara where we usually spent summers and where we have lived for nearly 10 years. So - I just caught up with your blogposts over at decor8 too. Hope, you feel a bit better...On my flight back - during these countless hours where it seems like you will forever hover over canadian land and water - I started thinking back about my time in CA. I loved it so much but I had to return back to Germany. It took me years to realize that and to finally see the truth. I mean - this was Santa Barbara - one of the most beautiful places! Free and easy living, sunshine, good food...how could you NOT feel totally happy at a place like that??? I didn't know and I didn't care about roots pulling me back to my home country. I had no deep connection to Germany at all. Family bonds were loose, only a handful friends I had managed to stay in contact with BUT STILL I HAD TO move back to Germany at some point to find my happiness again. Crazy, but over time I found out, that many other people experienced the same. Some even say that it is just not possible to stay happy and healthy in a different timezone than the one you are born in. Well - I really don't want to buy into that because my daughter Jette is born in CA...Anyway - do you feed your roots regularly with spending time in your home country? This might help with a feeling of emptiness. Germany and the US are in many ways very different and it takes a lot to live in a foreign country. I hope you don't' mind this long text - I totally understand your decision about your home workshop - very overwhelming. I still would love to participate in future gatherings If you have space. Also - I would be more than happy to offer or help with - for example - a jewelry craft at one of your workshops. Let me know in case you are interested.
